"During the Republican era, impoverished brothers Zhang Zhi and Zhang Ming make a fateful decision while burying the landlord’s concubine, Xuan Yue. Tempted by greed, they steal the valuable embroidered shoes from her feet, hoping to sell them and buy winter clothes for their sister-in-law, Feng Lan. But their act soon unleashes a chain of supernatural horrors—the shoes mysteriously reappear no matter how many times they try to return them, bloodstained footprints emerge, chickens are found dead, and nightmares haunt them relentlessly. The three find themselves trapped in a growing wave of paranormal terror. Tormented by fear and guilt, they gradually uncover the tragic truth behind the shoes: Xuan Yue did not die of illness but was brutally murdered by the landlord. She and Feng Lan’s younger brother, Xu Zhaohui, were once lovers, both driven to their deaths by the landlord’s cruelty. Guided subtly by Xuan Yue’s mother—Madam Mo, a mystic—and encouraged by Feng Lan’s unwavering resolve, the brothers finally confront their fears, renounce the ill-gotten gains, and expose the landlord’s crimes to seek justice for Xuan Yue and Xu Zhaohui. In the end, moved by Feng Lan’s integrity, they choose righteousness, submitting both the silver notes and the truth to the authorities. The landlord is brought to justice, and the wrongs are righted. The full story comes to light: Madam Mo, Xuan Yue’s birth mother, orchestrated everything to avenge her daughter, while Xuan Yue and Feng Lan’s brother had been lovers torn apart by the landlord’s malice. Though their lives remain humble, the three uphold their conscience and principles, gaining inner peace and Madam Mo’s heartfelt gratitude. Half a month later, they receive new clothes, silver dollars, and a letter of thanks from Madam Mo, who has since become a nun. Blending mystery, horror, and moral struggle, this folk legend explores greed and redemption, fear and courage. It poses a timeless question: How do ordinary people uphold their conscience in the face of poverty and temptation? In the end, goodness triumphs over evil, the truth is revealed, and the embroidered shoes—finally at peace—rest silently as the injustice is resolved."
