Madeline Kensington and Sebastian Prescott were childhood companions bound by an arranged childhood betrothal. After Madeline's mother died, she was sent to the countryside. Mrs. Prescott visited with young Sebastian, who gave Madeline his bracelet and promised to marry her one day.
