He Failed to See Me

Seven years. Daphne cut the hair she'd kept for him—he never noticed. Chloe changed glasses; he saw it at once. Meds with Chloe's notes. His jacket on Chloe's shoulders. Daphne always came last. Alone in the ER, she took off the ring, snapped her SIM, and flew to Santa Fe. Through Nest cams, she watched him realize she was gone. He found her notebooks of quiet disappointment, chased her with a late diamond, then drowned in hospital bills. She threw it all away and began again. No longer last.
