The Fox's Curse
In Hujialing Village, 60-year-old Li Dachun’s obsessive need for a male heir consumes him. His son, Li Tieshan, possesses the mind of a child, dashing Dachun’s dreams of a grandson. Desperate, he clings to the promises of a local spiritual medium (a shaman-like figure), ignoring villagers’ warnings. Blinded by envy over his own childlessness, the medium exploits Dachun’s desperation, weaving a cruel trap: kill the sacred white fox guardian of the village, mix its blood with his own, and force his daughter-in-law, Cui Lian, to drink it to bear a son. Defying all warnings of terrible retribution from villagers like Zhang Mazi and Zhu Dadan, the obsessed Dachun hunts the fox. Eerie green lights and phantom cries of a boy in the woods only strengthen his delusion of divine signs. He brutally slaughters the sacred fox. As blood spills, centipedes and black snakes swarm the courtyard – a harbinger of doom. Consumed by his mission, Dachun blends the bloods, even self-harming to replenish the mixture when threatened. Then, the haunting begins: ritual paper offerings turn to ash; identical animal bite marks appear on Cui Lian and Tieshan; a persistent fox stench chokes the air; the simple-minded Tieniu warns of a “furry shadow”; and Dachun is tormented by phantom wails and mocking whispers of “carrying on horror, not heritage” (“传宗接诡”). Haunted by nightmares and spectral foxes, he’s lured into the forbidden Valley of Venom, oblivious to the layers of deception ensnaring him. On Cui Lian’s labor day, Dachun forces the blood-wine down her throat against the midwife’s pleas, causing her to hemorrhage. Racing to the medium for help, Dachun stumbles upon proof of the fraud: stashes of fox blood and self-igniting talismans. Betrayal crashes down. Simultaneously, the medium storms the Li home, intent on seizing the “fertile” Cui Lian to break his own family’s curse. Amidst despair, the “dim-witted” Tieshan reveals a shocking truth: his disability was a ruse. Aware of his father’s madness and the medium’s evil, Tieshan and Cui Lian orchestrated the supernatural hauntings – hiring actors as vengeful fox spirits – to expose the lies and punish the wicked. The midwife confirms: the childless medium, driven by malicious envy, had long deceived villagers with false “blessings,” ruining families for profit. Confronted, the medium’s conspiracy unravels. Dachun, faced with his monstrous actions – killing the guardian spirit, torturing Cui Lian, surrendering to obsession – experiences shattering remorse. He sees the longed-for “grandson” was merely a deadly lure, a victim of his own delusion. As the dust settles, a white fox’s gaze lingers at the crossroads, a silent witness closing the chapter on this folly born of obsession. The true legacy, the story whispers, lies not in blood, but in clarity of mind and the courage to choose kindness.
